514crawls:

More Stops, More Pizzas, Still No Knockout

CRAWL PIZZERIA OLD MONTREAL

The Pitch

Continuing our elusive search for the city's best pizza, tonight we set our aim for Old Montreal (read about our downtown pizza crawl here).  Our regular crawl "committee" started out at Dolcetto & Co., then headed East on Saint-Paul street towards Mangiafoco and finally BEVO Bar + Pizzeria.

The Food

As we did in our first crawl, for comparison's sake, we ordered a baseline Margherita at each stop.  As for the second pizza, we just went with whatever tickled our fancy at the moment.  Now let the competition begin…

Dolcetto & Co: Margherita

"with burrata".  A crispy crust with fluffy interior made this pizza the best of the night.  Well-balanced tomato sauce and you can't go wrong with creamy burrata!

Dolcetto & Co: Lobster Pizzetta

"dill mozzarella, lobster & egg yolk".  Same crust as above.  The lobster and egg yolk were a little lost in the overwhelming taste of dill.

Mangiafoco: Margherita

"tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella, fresh basil, olive oil".  A thin crust that was somewhat soggy in the center, and a tomato sauce that was too salty made this pizza a miss.

Mangiafoco: Carbonara

"fresh cream whipped with garlic confit, pancetta, egg cooked at 62 degrees, parmigiano-reggiano".  With a thin crispy crust, a creamy sauce and rich yolk all under crunchy pancetta and shavings of sharp parmesan, this was an instant hit.

BEVO: Margherita thumbnail (click to enlarge)

BEVO: Margherita

"mozzarella, tomato sauce, basil".  Even though this had the thinnest crust of the night, it retained a good amount of crispiness under the sauce, which was very under-seasoned, resulting in an overall flat, almost tasteless pizza.

BEVO: Emilia Romagna

"meat stew, pancetta, mozzarella, fresh parsley".  Same crust and sauce as above. The mellow meat stew and crispy pancetta upped the flavour here, but we felt that it did not come together; something was missing.

The Verdict

Tonight we made two great discoveries in Dolcetto and Mangiafoco, while we revisited a favorite in BEVO.  We enjoyed each stop in its own way, from Dolcetto's casual/fun feel, to Mangiafoco's sophistication and finally BEVO's hip vibe.  However, we feel we still haven't found THE best pizza in town.  Stay tuned for #514PizzaCrawl, the third chapter, in the coming months…
